One of the most famous teas in the world, Japanese match is a powdered green tea that is used in the Japanese tea ceremony, and has been used for such for centuries. The ancient Japanese believe that tea was a gift from the heavens that holds great restorative and spiritual power. Ancient Japanese poet, seen no risky who is considered to be the most influential on the development of the tea ceremony (or chancy), believed “though many people drink tea, if you do not know the way of tea, tea will drink you up.” the rules around how to drink match have loosened, however. Two cups of brewed match contains 7 times the antioxidants of orange juice, 20 times that of apple juice, and nearly 20g of calcium. On a gram per gram basis, match contains roughly 10 times the polyphenols found in regular teas. Because of the health qualities, the tradition has broken – match is now even served cold. Match is made using gyokuro leaves that are steamed and dried after plucking. Next, the tea is stripped of all stems and veins, resulting in nothing but pure leaf, which is then stone ground into fine powder. Since the “tea” is powdered, the leaf itself is consumed – and there is no other tea in the world consumed like this! This tea is a high quality Japanese matcha grown in the izu peninsula near Tokyo. Traditionally, this tea is served hot with no additions, and is frothed with a whisk. For the best brew, we recommend preparing matcha with water that has been brought to a boil and cooled slightly (to about 180° f). Matcha can also be sifted before brewing, so it does not form lumps when water is added.

Excellent purchase
This tea is magnificent. It’s loose leave tea and you only need a small teaspoon per cup so there’s plenty to go around. It smells heavenly. I wish I could get a potpourri version for my house.

My favorite tea
This tea is an earl grey tea with a bit of vanila-flavor to it. If you’re bored of earl grey, this is something to try. It’s my favorite.

Gyokuro Green Tea; excellent flavors and fragrance.
This Gyokuro green tea tastes really good and it has a pleasant clean fragrance similar to other Gyokuro teas I have enjoyed. I regularly drink Gyokuro teas and I do like this one. The Gyokuro teas are naturally without the bitterness of Sencha or other teas; naturally sweet.

I make the tea with hot water that has been cooled down to be hot; but not boiling hot to the touch otherwise bitterness comes out of Gyokuro teas. I just add a little room temperature water to boiling hot water to bring the temperature down.

I have made many infusions of this tea from just three table spoons of tea in my (Tokoname, Fukugata) Japanese style tea pot (kyusu) with a ceramic sieve which I use just for Gyokuro teas. I have found the “rishi-tea” and “dens tea” as good Japanese tea pot sources which I have brewed this Gyokuro green tea in. I really like this tea; so I expect to order more later.
